Tarot - How it Works

Copyright © 2000 Kevin Farrow

Tarot is an age old system - forget about whether the cards date from the 15th century or whether as, according to Oespensky, the major arcana came from the twenty two pillars of the ancient Egyptian temples. The idea of the Tarot - how the cards work - preceeds both of these.

Tarot cards work on a very simple energetic principle - resonance. They work only if we are able to focus on a particular person or situation very strongly and hold the focus. Our personal vibration then mirrors the thoughts and emotions that we have about the person and situation. Very few people can actually tell the future from Tarot because you have to be clairvoyent to use the cards in this way. Once again, they only mirror energies so they will present a possible future, not necessarily the future.

Reading cards for yourself can show you exactly where you are in regards to the person or situation. However, if you can focus very well, you won’t really need them. You will be able to read your own energetic vibrations regarding the issue, but they are fun to play with.

Actually picking up cards for someone else is another matter. Few people are actually able to focus on anothers energy vibrations so that they could make such a reading meaningful. The client should always pick up the cards and only after deep focusing. This is because the cards will tell you exactly where you are at - and if you pick them up while you’re for a split sec-ong thinking of something else - or are off dream drifting - they’ll show you where you went, not what you picked the card for. Asking the question, and questions about the question, is only a way of getting you to focus - if your attention drifts, the cards will to. They have no intelligence of their own, you pick your resonance.

So wondering and wandering with your hands all over a deck or spread is a waste of time - focus on the situation and you will pick the right card.

If you don’t understand your Tarot reading, it is only because of one reason - you are avoiding the issue. You don’t have to understand the intricacies of ancient symbols. You will know instinctively what the card is about and what its symbols represent to you - after all - you picked it. Not that I’m against studying the symbology - they will make you appreciate the ‘answers’ in a different and more complex way - but not in a deeper way. If you have focused, the card will accurately tell how you feel and think about the issue. Whether you want to listen to yourself is another matter.

My advice is to use the cards one at a time. Focus on an issue, person or situation and draw a card and examine it. Let yourself understand why this was your response. Then move on to the next question.

Tarot is a marvellous tool to examine yourself and your motivations.
